Homebound I-80
/by Sejo Pan
Pushing down the cold hard shift
After being lost for so long, it is
Time to turn back.
Be it here to let you go,
So this is it.
Rolling up the window, locking outside
The roaring of the engine, and
The icy cold of the night.
On the windshield there is no more familiar reflection of you.
Stopping at the red light, I still turn my head like I used to
Looking over past your empty seat
Past all the tenderness in the nights
To meet in the morning without you the first ray of Blinding light.
The headlights are the eyes by the sleepless pillow
Unable to fathom the depth of the darkness
The highway is awake tonight
Whispering in rhythm, gently telling
All the words left unsaid
Accompanying the unresting dreams
By the glimmering glows of the dashboard
Giving warmth to the soft trembling
Of the season's early chill.
Stepping down on the pedal,
At full speed the world in the rear view mirror
Crumbling and fleeing away.
The highway is to disappear by the dawn.
And tomorrow another person in my arms
Will never know
This road I have once taken
With tears.
