Dear Dr. Chuang,
I read your March 4 opinion article online taiwandaily.com with interest and anger. Once again we Taiwanese were betrayed by the politicians. Every time when I saw picture of James Soong standing in front of the cameras, I always developed an ill feeling and wondered, "Will history repeat itself?"
"Although Chu had merely three households, they ended Chin's reign nevertheless." It would be the 21st Century's great human tragedy if the 23-million people in Taiwan let James Soong single-handedly shove them into Communist China's Gulag?
Attached "Formosans Betrayed" short article reflects my thoughts on Bian-Soong meeting and their 10-point consensus agreement.
Thanks and Regards,
Bao-tai Wei

All the Crows Are the Same Shade of Black

February is considered by many as Taiwanese martyrs month. But on February 24, 2005, just a few days shy of the 58th anniversary of the tragic 228 Incident of 1947, a Richter 9.8 political earthquake shook Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Violent shock waves instantly traveled to every corner on the island. The quake also triggered a devastating heart-wrenching tsunami across the oceans engulfing every Taiwanese community around the globe.
On that chilly winter day a democratically elected Taiwan president, with a diehard "pro unification, one China policy "proponent and his long-time political rivalry on his side, declared that he would give up the principle he had once held dear and supported by the overwhelming majority of the Taiwanese people. The president simply raised his hands and said, "I throw in the towel." Why couldn't they be more sensitive to the feeling of the families of the 228 Incident's victims? Why wouldn't they postpone their meeting and make their joint announcement on March 20, one-year anniversary of Taiwan's last presidential election from which the protests and riots had lingered on for 9 months at huge social and economic cost.
Bian-Soong Detente and NT$610 Billion Arms Deal
Now President Chen had said publicly he would not rule out the option for "eventual" unification of Taiwan with China. Is it still necessary for him to waste enormous sum of taxpayers' money to buy U.S. weapons system that will probably never be used? We staunch anti-Communist supporters of Taiwan who had been working so diligently to campaign for the arms procurement legislation feel a deep sense of betrayal by A-bian. Why did Soong suddenly decide to make peace with the man he believed had stolen the presidency from him? The kickbacks from NT$610 billion arms deal would be quite enticing. Surely it would pale the NT$100 million he had laundered in Chung Hsin Bills (¤¤¿³²¼¨é) Finance scandal. With the support of 34 additional PFP legislators' votes, the Lifa Yuan will soon debate and eventually pass A-bian's historical arms procurement bill. If we have learned from the Lafayette naval warship procurement scandal, the new Taiwan-U.S. arms deal will make many people in Taipei, Beijing and Washington exceptionally rich.
What Have James Soong and Kim Jong Il (North Korea Leader) in Common?
Kim has nuclear bombs and is making more of them. They are Kim's life-support system. Soong controls 34 PFP seats in Taiwan's Lifa Yuan that can cast pivotal votes to kill or pass important bills. They are Soong's life-support system. Kim is a Cold War survivor and knows very well how to survive between superpowers. Soong is a sophisticated schemer in Taipei's imperial court and knows how to make the most out of DPP and KMT. Kim is an expert in geopolitics and very skillful on the negotiation table with U.S., Japan, Russia, South Korea and China. Soong is very good at manipulating media and fooling people in Taiwan, U.S. and China.
